Rybelsus

Rybelsus, a daily pill, prescribed online by a licensed physician

Rybelsus (semaglutide) is FDA-approved for type 2 diabetes. Based on your health profile and goals, your physician may prescribe it off-label to support weight management, after a real evaluation, not a form that ends in a prescription.

  • Once-daily tablet, no injections
  • Prescribed only after a full evaluation by a licensed physician
  • FDA-approved for type 2 diabetes

Rybelsus is not FDA-approved for weight loss. When prescribed for weight management, it’s used off-label based on your physician’s clinical judgment. Prescription required after an online consultation. Not appropriate for everyone, see full safety information below.

About Rybelsus

What Rybelsus is, and how it works

Once daily

01

What is Rybelsus?

Rybelsus (semaglutide) is a prescription tablet, the only FDA-approved oral form of semaglutide, approved to improve blood sugar control in adults with type 2 diabetes. It contains the same active ingredient as Ozempic and Wegovy, taken as a once-daily pill instead of a weekly injection. Some physicians also prescribe it off-label to support weight management.

02

How does it work?

Rybelsus belongs to a class of medicines called GLP-1 receptor agonists. It mimics a hormone your body already produces, helping regulate blood sugar, slowing how quickly food leaves your stomach, and acting on the same pathways your body uses to signal fullness. Because it's taken by mouth rather than injected, Rybelsus must be taken on an empty stomach with a small amount of water, followed by a 30-minute wait before eating, drinking, or taking other oral medications. This timing is what allows it to be absorbed properly.

03

Who is it for?

Rybelsus may be a fit for patients who prefer a daily pill over a weekly injection. Your physician considers this alongside your blood sugar management needs or your broader weight management goals, and reviews your full history before deciding.

A simple daily routine

One tablet each morning, on an empty stomach, before your day gets started.

Safety Information

Important safety information about Rybelsus

Common side effects

Usually mild, and often improve over time.

Other things to be aware of

Rybelsus slows digestion, which can affect how your body absorbs other oral medications, particularly ones requiring precise dosing, such as thyroid medication. Combining Rybelsus with certain diabetes medications may increase the chance of low blood sugar. Rare but serious risks include inflammation of the pancreas and gallbladder problems.

FDA Boxed Warning

Rybelsus carries an FDA boxed warning related to thyroid tumor risk. See full safety information →

Your provider reviews your complete medical history before prescribing, to confirm Rybelsus is a safe fit for you.

Good to know

Frequently asked questions

Is Rybelsus FDA-approved for weight loss?

No. Rybelsus is FDA-approved for blood sugar management in adults with type 2 diabetes. When it’s prescribed for weight management, that’s an off-label use, legal and common, but not the same as an FDA-approved weight-loss treatment. If an FDA-approved weight-loss medication matters to you, Wegovy (an injectable form of the same active ingredient) may be worth asking about instead.

Is Rybelsus the same as Ozempic?

They contain the same active ingredient, semaglutide, but in different forms. Rybelsus is a once-daily tablet, while Ozempic is a once-weekly injection. Both are FDA-approved for type 2 diabetes, and both are sometimes prescribed off-label for weight management.

Do I have to take Rybelsus a specific way?

Yes, and it matters. Rybelsus must be taken on an empty stomach with no more than 4 oz of water, then followed by at least 30 minutes before eating, drinking, or taking other oral medications. Taking it any other way can reduce how well it’s absorbed. Your provider will walk you through this before you start.

What does "off-label" mean, and is it safe?

Off-label means a physician prescribes an FDA-approved medication for a use outside its official label, based on their clinical judgment and your individual situation. It’s a normal, legal, and common part of medicine; many widely used treatments are prescribed off-label every day. Your physician will walk you through the reasoning for your specific case.

What if I'm not eligible for Rybelsus?

If your provider determines Rybelsus isn’t the right fit, they’ll talk through other options that may be more appropriate for your health profile and goals. You’ll still leave your consultation with a plan.

How is the decision made about whether I get a prescription?

A licensed physician reviews your full health history, current medications, and goals during a real consultation. Medication is prescribed only when it’s clinically appropriate, not automatically.
